In this article the author reports on the successful treatment of acne with a combination of laser treatment on the ear points and body acupuncture. Sixty-eight cases were randomly divided into two statistically comparable groups. The treatment group received both ear and body points, and the control received body points only. The ages ranged from 14-43 years, the disease duration was from less than three months to over one year and there was a slight predominance of males over females. The treatment group received laser therapy on ear Lung, Spleen, Large Intestine, Sanjiao, Endocrine, Adrenal Gland and Cheek. Three to four points were chosen at each session and the laser was held 30-50cm from the ear points for 3-5 minutes on each point. Treatment was given daily for 10 days, alternating between ears. Both groups received acupuncture at the following points: Hegu L.I.-4, Quchi L.I.-11, Shangxing DU-23, Taiyang (M-HN-9), Zusanli ST-36 and Yangbai GB-14. Additional points were given according to the diagnosis: for damp and heat in the Stomach, Tianshu ST-25 and Yinlingquan SP-9; for stagnation of Liver qi, Taichong LIV-3 and Zhongji REN-3; for disharmony between Penetrating (Chong) and Conception (Ren) vessels, Xuehai SP-10 and Sanyinjiao SP-6; and for abdominal distension, Zhongwan REN-12 and Tianshu ST-25. The lesions on the face were surrounded with needles at a 15 degree angle, and plum blossom needling was given on the lesion until there was a little bleeding. All needles were retained for 30 minutes. Patients were asked to reduce their intake of spicy, energy-dense food, increase fruit and vegetables in their diet, to wash the lesions with hot water and not to squeeze the pustules. Women with irregular menses were given corrective treatment (not specified). The results showed the superiority of the combined ear and body treatment, which had a cure rate of 77.8%, compared to only 46.9% in the control. (9/06)
